На просторах интернета я вот на такое наткнулся: "Shakespeare, the poet, is called the sonnets’ ‘begetter’, i.e., creator, and God, our creator, is called ‘our immortal Poet’. It’s a simple joke, and almost certainly the joke intended by Thorpe, and therefore ‘begetter’ with equal certainty refers to the author of the poems."
И тут мне подумалось, а не переиначивает ли 'the only begetter' формулу 'the only begotten Son', который, кстати, Слово (Ин. 1:14 "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.")?
